Climbing Mount Toubkal: A Journey of Recovery, Resilience, and Teamwork

In May 2026, our team travelled to Morocco to take on Mount Toubkal. Some challenges stay with you long after they are over, and this was one of those challenges. More than just a physical achievement, it was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through recovery, resilience, and teamwork, and a moment our team will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Standing at over 4,000 metres above sea level in temperatures dropping as low as minus twelve degrees, every step of the climb tested us. The altitude was punishing. The conditions were brutal. The terrain demanded everything we had, both physically and mentally. But through it all, one truth held the group together: nobody climbed alone.

A Mountain That Means More

Mount Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa, towering above the High Atlas range in Morocco. For experienced climbers it is a serious undertaking. For a group of people in recovery, many of whom have faced addiction, criminal justice involvement, homelessness, and personal struggles that would have broken most, it was something else entirely. It was a symbol.

This climb was never just about reaching a summit. It was about proving, to ourselves and to anyone watching, that the people written off by society are capable of extraordinary things when given the right support and the right belief.

Strength Through Recovery

Every member of the team brought their own story to the mountain. Years of addiction overcome. Time served and turned into something positive. Lives rebuilt step by step through honest work, peer support, and the kind of determination that only comes from having lost everything and chosen to start again.

Toubkal asked us to draw on all of it. When the air thinned and the legs grew heavy, the lessons learned in recovery became the lessons that got us up the mountain:

  • Take it one step at a time
  • Ask for help when you need it
  • Look out for the person next to you
  • Keep going, even when every part of you wants to stop
  • Trust the process and the people around you

These are not climbing techniques. They are recovery principles. And on Toubkal, they were the only things that mattered.

Nobody Climbed Alone

The most powerful part of the experience was the way the group moved as one. When somebody slowed, somebody else carried their pack for a stretch. When somebody doubted whether they could make it, the rest of the team reminded them why they could. There was no ego on that mountain, only encouragement.

That is the essence of peer support, and it is the foundation of everything we do at Foundation 2 Change. People who have been through it understand it. People who understand it can help others through it. And when a group of people who have all walked similar paths come together with a shared goal, the result is something genuinely powerful.

Reaching the Summit

Reaching the top of Mount Toubkal was an emotional moment for every single person who made it. Standing above the clouds, looking out across the High Atlas, the weight of the journey hit hard. The cold, the doubt, the exhaustion, all of it gave way to something simpler. We had done it. Together.

But the summit was not the real victory. The real victory was the journey that led each member of the team to that mountain in the first place. The decisions to choose recovery. The work to rebuild relationships, careers, and self-belief. The willingness to keep going even when the easier option was to give up.

Toubkal was the celebration of that work, not the cause of it.

What This Means for Our Community

At Foundation 2 Change, we believe that recovery is possible for anyone. Climbs like this prove it in the most visible way imaginable. The people on that mountain are the same people who, not long ago, were locked in cycles of addiction, offending, or homelessness. Today they are summiting peaks, supporting newcomers in our programmes, and showing the next generation what is possible.

That visibility matters. It changes how people in recovery see themselves, and it changes how the wider community sees them too.

Thank You

Huge thanks go to every member of the team who took on this challenge, to the guides and supporters who helped us prepare, and to everyone who cheered us on from home. You all played a part in getting us to that summit.

Reaching the top of Mount Toubkal was not just about conquering a mountain. It was about proving that no matter how hard the journey gets, together we can overcome anything.

If our story has inspired you, or if you would like to support the work we do with people in recovery across Birmingham, please get in touch with the Foundation 2 Change team. There is a mountain in every life, and nobody should have to climb theirs alone.
